How Many Shingles for a 3,000 Square Foot House?
Roofing squares needed
36.9 squares
A 3,000 square foot footprint, 60 by 50, at a 6/12 pitch with ten percent waste.
When the figures look right, the roofing material list downloads as a real PDF with your business details on it, built inside your own browser. Nothing you type is uploaded anywhere.
How that number is worked out
These are the figures this page was built with and every line the calculator produces from them. Change anything above and all of it moves.

Roof pitch compared
Pitch is the number most people guess at, and it is worth more shingles than any other input. Same house, five pitches.
| Roof pitch | Roofing squares needed |
|---|---|
| 4/12 | 34.8 squares |
| 6/12 | 36.9 squares |
| 8/12 | 39.7 squares |
| 10/12 | 43 squares |

What else matters here
Thirty seven squares is a three day roof for a normal crew and a genuinely large material order: 111 bundles, nearly four rolls of underlayment, and enough weight that loading it all on the roof at once is a question for the framing rather than the boom operator.
At this size the staging plan is worth as much as the take off. Split the roof into sections that can each be torn off, dried in and shingled inside a day, so the house is never open overnight. Weather on a three day roof is not a risk you accept, it is one you plan around.
Ordering at this scale also changes the waste conversation. Ten percent of 37 squares is nearly four squares of deliberate offcut, which is worth having a plan for: starter course from the cut tabs, ridge cap from the field, and the rest stacked for the repair in year ten rather than paid to the dumpster.
What this calculator assumes
- Footprint times the slope multiplier gives the actual roof surface. A 6/12 roof is 11.8 percent larger than the ground it covers, which is the number most people forget.
- Three bundles per square is standard for both three tab and architectural shingles. Check your brand, a few premium lines run four.
- Synthetic underlayment is figured at 10 squares per roll, starter and ridge cap at one linear foot per foot.
Questions people ask
How many bundles of shingles for a 3,000 sq ft house?
About 111 bundles at 6/12 with ten percent waste, which is 36.9 squares of roof over a 3,000 square foot footprint.
How many pallets of shingles is that?
Roughly three, since most suppliers palletise at about 42 bundles. Confirm with your supplier, because pallet counts vary by brand and by shingle weight.
Is ten percent enough waste on a big roof?
On a simple large gable, yes. Big houses usually are not simple, and every valley, dormer and hip raises it. Fifteen percent is a safer default at this size unless you have measured the planes.
The roofing calculator takes any dimensions you like and hands back the same list.
