What else matters here
Five hundred and twenty eight square feet is nineteen sheets of four by eight with waste in, or thirteen sheets of four by twelve. That difference is not just sheet count, it is joints: a twelve foot wall takes three eight foot sheets with two butt joints, or one twelve foot sheet with none.
Butt joints are the ones that show. Tapered edges meet in a shallow valley that takes tape and compound cleanly, but two cut ends meet flat and have to be built out over a couple of feet to hide. A room with no butt joints finishes faster and looks better under raking light.
So if twelve foot board will physically get into the room, use it. If the stairwell, the hallway turn or the doorway says no, eight footers and careful joint staggering is the answer instead.
What this calculator assumes
- Joint compound is figured at one 4.5 gallon bucket per 475 sq ft of board for a full three coat finish. A level 5 finish uses more.
- Tape is figured at 380 linear feet per 1000 sq ft of board, screws at 32 per sheet for 16 inch on center framing.
- Longer sheets mean fewer butt joints, which is less taping and a flatter wall. Use 12 footers where they will fit through the door.
