What else matters here
A hundred and twenty square feet plus ten percent is 132, which is six boxes at the common 22.5 square foot carton size. That leaves you fifteen square feet over, which is the right amount: enough for two or three replacement planks in five years, not enough to feel wasteful.
Box coverage varies a lot by product, from around 18 square feet for some engineered hardwood to over 30 for wide plank laminate. The number on this page assumes 22.5; change it above to whatever is printed on the carton you are actually buying.
Whatever you buy, buy it all at once. Flooring is made in batches and the shade moves between them. A box bought six months later to fix a scratch will be visibly different, which is why the leftover from the original order is worth keeping flat and dry.
What this calculator assumes
- 10 percent waste covers a straight lay in a simple rectangle. Go to 15 for a diagonal or herringbone lay, and 20 if the room is cut up with closets and angles.
- Buy the whole job in one delivery. Dye lot and batch shade move between production runs, and a single replacement box six months later will not match.
