The number worth checking on a shed is the pitch, because asphalt shingles have a minimum slope and small buildings are where it gets violated. Below 4/12 most manufacturers still allow shingles down to 2/12, but only with a doubled underlayment layer cemented together, and the warranty says so explicitly.
Below 2/12, shingles are not a roof. Water moves too slowly and wind drives it back up under the tabs. That range needs roll roofing, a peel and stick membrane or a standing seam panel, and a shed built with a nearly flat roof is the most common place this rule gets ignored and the most common place a shed roof leaks.

- Footprint times the slope multiplier gives the actual roof surface. A 6/12 roof is 11.8 percent larger than the ground it covers, which is the number most people forget.
- Three bundles per square is standard for both three tab and architectural shingles. Check your brand, a few premium lines run four.
- Synthetic underlayment is figured at 10 squares per roll, starter and ridge cap at one linear foot per foot.
