How Many Shingles for a 4,000 Square Foot House?

Roofing squares needed

49.2 squares

A 4,000 square foot footprint, 80 by 50, at a 6/12 pitch with ten percent waste.

It does not stop at a number.

When the figures look right, the roofing material list downloads as a real PDF with your business details on it, built inside your own browser. Nothing you type is uploaded anywhere.

12 in of runrise, inrafter linefootprintroof surfacefootprint x slope multiplier / 100 = squares
A roof is always bigger than the house under it, and how much bigger is right angle geometry rather than an allowance. Square the rise, add 144, take the root, divide by 12, and that multiplier turns a footprint into real surface area before any waste is added.

Roof pitch compared

Pitch is the number most people guess at, and it is worth more shingles than any other input. Same house, five pitches.

What else matters here

Four thousand square feet of footprint at 6/12 is 4,472 square feet of roof, 49.2 squares with waste, a hundred and forty eight bundles.

At this budget the shingle itself is worth choosing rather than defaulting to. Three tab is a single flat layer with cutouts, the cheapest thing on the shelf, typically rated around twenty to twenty five years and around 60 to 70 miles per hour, and it has nearly disappeared from new residential work.

Architectural, also called laminated or dimensional, bonds a second layer onto the first. It is heavier, carries a much higher wind rating, reads as texture from the street, and is what almost every house gets now. Designer and luxury lines go heavier again to imitate slate or shake, run four or five bundles per square, and cost roughly double. The honest comparison is not the headline warranty term, which almost nothing reaches, but the wind rating, the weight and whether the installer is certified for the system.

What this calculator assumes

  • Footprint times the slope multiplier gives the actual roof surface. A 6/12 roof is 11.8 percent larger than the ground it covers, which is the number most people forget.
  • Three bundles per square is standard for both three tab and architectural shingles. Check your brand, a few premium lines run four.
  • Synthetic underlayment is figured at 10 squares per roll, starter and ridge cap at one linear foot per foot.

Questions people ask

How many bundles of shingles for a 4,000 sq ft house?

About 148 bundles at a 6/12 pitch with ten percent waste, which is 49.2 squares.

What is the difference between three tab and architectural shingles?

Three tab is one flat layer with cutouts. Architectural bonds a second layer on, which makes it heavier, much better rated for wind, and textured rather than flat.

Are designer shingles worth the money?

They imitate slate or shake and run four or five bundles per square at roughly double the cost. Judge them on weight and wind rating rather than the headline warranty term.
