What else matters here
The area here is the four walls plus the ceiling, with nothing deducted for the door or the window. That is deliberate. You cut a door out of a full sheet and the offcut above it is almost always too small to use anywhere, so deducting openings on a room this size gives you a sheet count that is short.
Fifteen sheets of four by eight is a light pickup load and fits through a standard door. Ten foot sheets would cut the joints down but will not turn a corner in most hallways, which is the practical reason eight footers still dominate residential work.
Hang the ceiling first, then the walls, and run the wall sheets horizontally. A horizontal joint at four feet is at working height and is far easier to finish flat than a vertical joint you have to reach the top of.
What this calculator assumes
- Joint compound is figured at one 4.5 gallon bucket per 475 sq ft of board for a full three coat finish. A level 5 finish uses more.
- Tape is figured at 380 linear feet per 1000 sq ft of board, screws at 32 per sheet for 16 inch on center framing.
- Longer sheets mean fewer butt joints, which is less taping and a flatter wall. Use 12 footers where they will fit through the door.
