What else matters here
A hundred and four sheets. At this size the argument that costs money is not the board, it is the level of finish, and it is worth settling in writing before anybody tapes anything.
The industry defines levels 0 through 5. Level 3 is fine under a heavy texture, level 4 is the normal residential standard for flat paint and light texture, and level 5 adds a thin skim coat over the entire surface. The difference between 4 and 5 is a day or two of labor and a noticeable amount of compound, and it is invisible until the wall is painted.
It stops being invisible under gloss paint or under light raking down a wall from a window or a can light, which is exactly when the painter says the drywall is bad and the drywaller says it was a level 4 as ordered. Naming the level in the contract is what settles that before it happens rather than after.
What this calculator assumes
- Joint compound is figured at one 4.5 gallon bucket per 475 sq ft of board for a full three coat finish. A level 5 finish uses more.
- Tape is figured at 380 linear feet per 1000 sq ft of board, screws at 32 per sheet for 16 inch on center framing.
- Longer sheets mean fewer butt joints, which is less taping and a flatter wall. Use 12 footers where they will fit through the door.
