The industry rule of thumb is that a house needs about three and a half times its floor area in drywall, counting walls, ceilings and both sides of interior partitions. A 1,500 square foot house is therefore around 5,250 square feet of board, roughly 181 sheets.

- Longer sheets mean fewer butt joints, which is less taping and a flatter wall. Use 12 footers where they will fit through the door.
