The part that makes a small floor look professional is the stagger. End joints in neighboring rows should be at least six inches apart, and most manufacturers ask for eight or twelve. Line them up and you get an H pattern that reads as a mistake from the doorway; step them evenly and you get a staircase, which reads as a different mistake.
The way to avoid both is to work from several boxes at once and to start rows with offcuts rather than cutting fresh planks. The piece left at the end of one row is usually the right length to begin the next, which is also where the waste allowance goes: a room with random lengths uses very little.
What this calculator assumes
- 10 percent waste covers a straight lay in a simple rectangle. Go to 15 for a diagonal or herringbone lay, and 20 if the room is cut up with closets and angles.
- Buy the whole job in one delivery. Dye lot and batch shade move between production runs, and a single replacement box six months later will not match.
