A space this big is usually open plan, which removes the usual answer to which way the planks should run. There is no single long wall to follow, and the joists may be hidden under a slab or a subfloor that does not care.
The rule that holds up is to run the planks along the longest sight line, which normally means away from the main entrance to the space, so the eye follows the boards into the room rather than across them. If there is a wall of glass, running the planks toward it also means the raking light travels along the seams instead of across them, which hides every small height difference between planks. Where those two disagree, follow the light.
What this calculator assumes
- 10 percent waste covers a straight lay in a simple rectangle. Go to 15 for a diagonal or herringbone lay, and 20 if the room is cut up with closets and angles.
- Buy the whole job in one delivery. Dye lot and batch shade move between production runs, and a single replacement box six months later will not match.
