The box count is the same whichever product you pick, so the decision worth making is which one. Solid hardwood is a single piece of wood, sands and refinishes many times, and moves with humidity, which is why it is normally nailed down over a wood subfloor and kept out of basements. Engineered wood is a real wood wear layer over plywood, far more stable, and it can float over concrete.
Laminate is a photograph under a hard melamine wear layer, cheap and very scratch resistant, and it swells permanently if water sits on it. Luxury vinyl plank is fully waterproof and quieter underfoot, which is why it has taken over kitchens, baths and basements, and it dents more easily than laminate does. Match the product to the room and the subfloor first, and to the look second.
What this calculator assumes
- 10 percent waste covers a straight lay in a simple rectangle. Go to 15 for a diagonal or herringbone lay, and 20 if the room is cut up with closets and angles.
- Buy the whole job in one delivery. Dye lot and batch shade move between production runs, and a single replacement box six months later will not match.
