On a whole house the question stops being how many boxes and becomes when. Flooring goes in after the drywall is finished and after the walls are painted, because sanding dust and roller spatter are much easier to deal with on a subfloor than on a new floor. It goes in before the baseboard, so the trim lands on top of the finished surface and covers the expansion gap.
It also goes in after the HVAC is running, because acclimation means nothing in a house that is not yet at living temperature and humidity. Cabinets are the exception worth deciding early: a floating floor should run up to the cabinets rather than under them, since a cabinet run screwed through the field pins it, while a nailed or glued floor can go either way. Once it is down, cover it with builder's paper or hardboard until the job is finished.
What this calculator assumes
- 10 percent waste covers a straight lay in a simple rectangle. Go to 15 for a diagonal or herringbone lay, and 20 if the room is cut up with closets and angles.
- Buy the whole job in one delivery. Dye lot and batch shade move between production runs, and a single replacement box six months later will not match.
