What else matters here
Four hundred square feet is twenty boxes, about a thousand pounds of flooring depending on the product, and enough that it should be delivered into the room and left to acclimate rather than carried in on the day.
Acclimation is not a formality at this size. Most manufacturers want the boxes opened or at least stacked in the room for 48 to 72 hours so the material reaches the temperature and humidity it will live in. Laying a cold floor in a warm room is how you get gaps in February.
A 20 foot run also reaches the limit some floating floors set on continuous length without an expansion break. Check the instruction for the product: many cap it around 30 to 40 feet, but a few low end laminates are stricter, and exceeding it voids the warranty.
What this calculator assumes
- 10 percent waste covers a straight lay in a simple rectangle. Go to 15 for a diagonal or herringbone lay, and 20 if the room is cut up with closets and angles.
- Buy the whole job in one delivery. Dye lot and batch shade move between production runs, and a single replacement box six months later will not match.
