This calculator counts boxes rather than dollars because material price is the part that moves most. Laminate and entry level luxury vinyl plank typically run a low single digit figure per square foot, mid range engineered wood sits a few dollars above that, and solid hardwood in a wide plank or an unusual species runs well past it.
Installed price is a different number and usually roughly doubles the material, because it takes in the tear out, the disposal, the underlayment, the transitions, the baseboard or shoe molding, and any subfloor prep. Get a quote that lists those lines separately. A cheap per square foot number with subfloor prep priced later is the most common way a floor quote goes wrong.
What this calculator assumes
- 10 percent waste covers a straight lay in a simple rectangle. Go to 15 for a diagonal or herringbone lay, and 20 if the room is cut up with closets and angles.
- Buy the whole job in one delivery. Dye lot and batch shade move between production runs, and a single replacement box six months later will not match.
